And away we go!

Greta and Anna finished their soccer games yesterday. I forgot my camera and am waiting for parent's to share pictures. Will post those as they come in.

In the meantime: Greta got her first goal this season! It seems she does really well when she's upset with me. After I chastised her for not playing as well as I/we know she can, she went out there and kicked that ball all over the field. I'm wondering if she was 'seeing' me as she kicked it...

Next, we returned a HUGE diesel pick-up that Tony used while playing/acting as Apartment Manager while the original apartment manager was recuperating from a nasty car accident in April. Really long story short: Mike was in a rollover accident, life flighted to KU Med Center, Dr's weren't sure if/when/how he might recover. Lucky for him, his family and friends he is just about 100% recovered. A miracle indeed! Anyway ~ brought back the truck, visited their many animals which include a horse, a rooster, a turkey, 13 adult sheep, app. 7 lambs (yes, awww...) Big(some kind of Mastiff) and Otto (mini doberman)...

After, we stopped by the airport as Lawrence Municipal Airport is celebrating 80 years. Holy cow! They were offering rides with donations going to Make a Wish. There's no way Tony or I could leave the airport w/out getting into a plane. So, the four of us loaded up w/ Dick Martin flying his plane. Thank you Mr. Martin! We flew over Lawrence and got some neat pictures of our house

What a beautiful day.

Next, we headed over to Pendleton's to pick some of the FREE asparagus due to the hail storm on Friday night. We got there a little late for picking it. If you are local, be sure to sign up for Karen's newsletters ~ then you, too, can get the scoop on what's happening before anyone else. : ) So we missed picking the asparagus, but, we got to see this spring's litter of kittens, tasted purple asparagus (sweeter than the green), and found some annuals for the garden that I forgot to get at the Plant/Bake Sale earlier this month.

Next, (seriously??) we found Davenport Winery. It's off 1057, not far from Pendleton's.

We did a little wine tasting before heading back out and over to a friend's home for a birthday party. Which was the last stop for the day.

Now I've got to get back out to the beautiful day and finish planting tomatoes. Tony's tilling the garden up in the field w/ the tiller. He's having a field day (pardon the pun)with this thing. More on that as it progresses...

Hello!I'm Julie, and I blog at Mom2Ways. I'd like to thank Carol for allowing me to interrupt her blog. We are taking part in the Wii Fit Mommies Blog Swing.Last week on Fitness Friday, I shared how I had reached rock bottom. I ripped out a pair of shorts. Did this motivate me to start moving? Did this slow the intake of my precious Pepsi? Yes. For one day. After changing clothes, I went back to my office and walked around the block several times doing intervals of powerwalking. And I drank several bottles of water.But on Saturday, I went back to my Pepsi and camped out at my computer.Why do I keep doing this? Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I want to be healthy. I want to be fit. I want to be able to play with my kids. I want to be able to run. But I also want to eat my chocolate and drink my Pepsi. I know that I need to find a balance: all things in moderation.I turn 40 this year, and I really want the next 40 years to be different. But my struggle is going from desire to doing. There was an old song that said, "your desire is the confirmation that the destination is there". I have the desire, but will I ever reach the destination?Am I the only one who struggles with this? Please tell me I'm not alone!

Vacation Pictures are here!

Okay most of the vacation pictures are here. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see a slideshow of our trip. You can click on the pictures to make them larger. Still working on how to make them slightly larger w/out completely slowing down the page.

We had a wonderful time. So much to do, and yet we had lots of pool/beach time with the girls. We took them parasailing, to the aquarium where we got kissed by a dolphin, to a beautiful hacienda for dinner and entertainment. We even had a beautiful dinner party on the beach with the other Assurity families/couples.

We visited X'el - Ha which is an amazing outdoor & natural waterpark. You can swim with the fish. GG took to the water like the fish that she is. It took AB a little bit to get used to the snorkels and fins, but once she got it, we were snorkeling!

The girls were up early every day with the sun (it's amazing how much nicer it is to wake up to the sun as opposed to the beep beep beep of the alarm). Who am I kidding, we were all up early. Breakfast was on the patio every morning with a wide variety of American and some Mexican fare. The fresh fruit was a highlight for me and GG. We would look for a new fruit each morning. One of our favorites was the Granada fruit. You only eat the seeds like the Pomegranate. It was yummy mixed with blueberries and fresh papaya.

The Gala dinner was (as AB would say...) Way Cool. There were actors dressed as Mayan Indians taking pictures with us and gave us a show, too. The theme in the dining room was ancient Mayan. We had to walk through trees and palms to get to the dining room. Pictures could do no justice. At least my pictures. ; )

Fitness Friday ~ Week 5

Is it me or do these weeks just fly by?

I'm keeping it short today. It's a beautiful 60 something degrees and I really ought to be outside w/ AB. Walking the dogs in the field, swinging, and maybe even vaccuum the sand/beach out of the Jeep.

I had an okay week. That darn Jenn over at The Coupon Coup issued a challenge on the forum and my abs are feeling it! I'm 50 shy on each side of breaking 1000 turns. I just don't know how to go any faster. And to top that, AB has taken a liking to doing the Jackknife position. I can say proudly that I'm up to 30 of those. : ) I may have thunder thighs, but I'll get a flat tummy in no time! LOL Aside from the challenge, the diet's been okay. You know who was visiting and boy, I have no will power then. AB says, "Can we go to McD's for lunch?" "Sure!" , "Can we go to the cookie store?" "Sure!"... you get the idea.

And guess what? Even with the lack of will power, I'm down a pound. I'll take it!

This coming week, I'm back to a normal diet, better will power, and my ever ready cheerleader in tow. How is your week going?

Wii Fit Friday ~ Week 4

It's Friday! Time for that magical time of week where we check in. This has been a good week. I've worked out all but one day. And Fannie (the name I've lovingly given my Wii Fit Board) said it was okay to take a break. : )
I've been keeping with my routine: 4-5 yoga poses, 4-5 strength exercises ~ I've opened all the challenges!, 15-20 minutes aerobics, and 3-4 balance games. AB has even upped the ante for me this week. I've included running. She's been asking me to run with her yet I don't get any credit. So I thought I'd like to get some credit, too. So, some days I run once with my Mii, and other days I'll be running with AB's Mii, too.
I haven't had any amazing scores to brag about. Oh, wait. Maybe one. The running, believe it or not. I'm not sure what the score is based upon, but I got 198% after running the short path. Yippee!
So, now the week's scale:

Starting: 173.1
Week 1: 170.0
Week 2: 169.5
Week 3: 170.0

Week 4: 170.0

No change. I'm okay with it. As everyone says, once it starts falling off it'll melt. I'm patiently waiting! In the meantime, I am seeing a difference physically. And I'm okay with that. I also know that it's that time of month, so the scale naturally wants to go up.

Because of the CPSIA act that was passed in 2008, toys, books, clothing, art, educational supplies, materials for the learning disabled, bicycles, and more for children 12 and under must be tested for lead. New and old. The big companies can handle this expense. The little shop that we love to shop at cannot.

About The CPSIA:President Bush signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (H.R. 4040) into law August 14, 2008. The CPSIA was passed to protect children from unsafe toys after the widely publicized recalls of 2007 which shook the public's trust. However, the CPSIA does not just encompass toys. It regulates ALL products for children under 12 years of age. Clothing, cloth diapers, car seats, books, bicycles, jewelry, electronic products, blankets, sheets, bibs, strollers—EVERYTHING.
This legislation, while well intentioned, has unintended consequences that threaten the children's resale industry. Large portions of inventory that were safe and legal to sell on February 9th will be defined as "banned hazardous substances" overnight—regardless of whether these products contain dangerous materials.

Wii Fit Friday ~ Week 3

And so another week has gone by. Okay, first the measurements... then you can read w/out the anticipation. LOL

I was kinda expecting something a little different. I've missed one day on the Wii Fit this week. AB won't let me forget. Bless her heart. ~She's having pajama day at school today with pancakes as a snack. I thought this would be a good time to come home to write and stay away from the snack.

As I was saying... I was hoping for something a little different. I know that muscle weighs more than fat. I know my pants fit better (not enough to warrant new pants yet). I know that my energy level is better as well as my attitude... (okay, small pity party at the moment, but very small!). I'd just like to see some of that on the scale!! Is that too much to ask for?

I've partnered with my friend KS to reach our goals. She even has me thinking Weight Watchers. The nerve! : ) She gave me the starting book and the little points chart. I've started a food journal. Boy doesn't that just make you think about what you are putting past those lips. It will work... I've got DH on board, too. He won't watch his points, but he's been a great source of encouragement. And compliments. (blushing)

Wii Fit Friday ~ Week 2

I'm still here! Still going strong and still having fun.

I've been sticking to the same routine of yoga/strength exercises, 10-20 minutes aerobics, and a few balance games. My arms right now are really starting to show some improvement. Thanks mostly to the plank, push ups, and boxing. I box every other day. I'm getting more "nice job"'s from the trainer this week as opposed to "I know you can do better". I believe it's 'cause I'm focusing not just on the jabs, but on the timing. You get two points for timing to one point of just jabbing correctly.

I have added a new daily exercise which will probably up my aerobics minutes daily, but will be worth it... I've added the ten minute hula-hoop. Five minutes to the right, five minutes to the left. Holy mother of hula-hoops! That is a workout... I'm up to 3311 rotations total (calorie incinerator!). After about three minutes into the workout, each side, I notice that my hips are moving jellylike. I can't explain it exactly, but the hips kinda feel like jelly and I have to actually focus on rotating. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

Weekly numbers:

Beginning weight: 173.1

Week 1: 170

Week 2: 169.5

total loss to date: 3.6

Not bad this week... the scale is still going in the right direction... down. My wonderful husband reminded me that the fat is (hopefully) turning to muscle and the scale won't recognize the loss right away. But my pants do! They are feeling a little loose at the waist. Woo hoo! Guess I won't have to go and buy a moo-moo after all. : ) DH says that he's noticed a difference, too. Not sure whether to believe him or not, but it sure makes me giddy inside to hear it.

A dear friend of mine is Wii-fit'ing, too. Yeah, KS! Together we will prevail!

Oh! I have a new short term goal (which explains the hula-hooping)...

12 pounds by the middle of Feb...

Cancun baby!

AB is still my biggest cheerleader. Everyday she asks if I've Fit'ed for the day yet.

Sock Hop

The girl scouts at GG's elementary school hosted a sock hop this past weekend. A father/daughter event. I was able to attend as photographer.

They were dancing, hoola hooping, had a bubble blowing contest... they even got their picture taken with Elvis!

It looked like a success and the girls were all talking about how fun it will be again next year. Guess it might turn into an annual thing?

I made the skirts for GG and her friend KVC. I must say, the pattern was very easy to read and they were so much fun to make. The girls were thrilled and looked adorable!

Wii Fit Friday ~ Week One

Drum roll please...
It's working! I have lost weight in the last week! I was so nervous getting on the Fit scale today. Especially after eating a few Munchkins this morning. (Had I done the weigh in before doing errands, I do think I'd have stayed away from the Munchkins.)
So here it is:

Beginning weight: 173.1
Today's weight: 170
difference: 3.1 pounds

Beginning BMI: 29.55
Today's BMI: 29.02
I could see a difference on the chart. I'm no longer on the cusp of obese!

My WiiFit Age is still bouncing anywhere from 32 - 34. Which is still very okay with me. I missed the last two days of training and the scale chastised me a little. But very nicely I must say. So I think that I will stay with the workout that I've made for myself the next week and maybe add some weights while doing the 20 minute steps. I'll try to get a good picture of me in the dress that I intend to wear for my birthday dinner in June and edit it into this note. So if you are reading this, it'll be posted soon.

So you know that I was at the WiiFit Moms Twitter party last Saturday night. Talk about crazy! (in a good way) I was a little late arriving as I had a Brownie Pizza/Swim party. (which was a lot better 'cuz I didn't have to swim) I logged in and tried to keep up with the goings on... I found a few other venues that you can watch the chats roll. And I mean roll. There was so much happening and it was fun reading the different conversations going on. I tried to put in a word or two, but finally decided that I would just watch. It was my first twitter event after all... anyway... there were some really great prizes for those of us who attended. And I was one of the lucky winners! woo hoo!

I won a Baby Banz sunhat/sunglasses set. So I ordered the Kidz size in pink with the hopes that it would fit AB and if not, give it to my friend's daughter. I gave Julie the size/information on Monday, the box arrived today! Luckily it is near 60 degrees today, so AB will be showing it off.

I finally found the Kashi Cereal Bars!

In my mailbox in the last 30 days I have found not only samples of the new Kashi Cereal Bar, but in the packaging was a coupon to get a free box and several coupons to share with friends a $2 coupon. I've been sharing. So I finally find these cereal bars at the Dillons on 23rd Street which I never shop at because of location. Monday I thought I'd go so I could see the new layout and remodeling that occured. It's really nice! I'm hoping the 6th/Wak looks that good when it's done in May. For those of you who didn't know... we've had birds for the last several years. Not very successful as we've just lost our last duck. We've raised from chick stage:

African Geese (this is Aladdin, a very cool goose indeed),

chickens,
and Pekin Ducks. This is Ming Ming a few weeks ago.

IF we get anymore birds this spring, I'm putting my foot down and getting a bird that migrates or has the choice to migrate. Chickens were great for eggs, but they are messy buggers. Chicken Love (GG named her) left us eggs by the front door. Very nice of her. But I doubt any other chicken would be so kind.
I'm thinking Mallard this spring.
Maybe a chicken, too. We shall see...

Wii Fit Friday ~ The beginning

Okay. So this is it. The beginning for Wii Fit Mommies. I'm excited! I'm excited to work out with all these amazing women. I'm excited to have fun ridding these pounds I've gotta lose. I'm nervous, too. I'm nervous that I'll lose the momentum that I've got going right now. I'm nervous that I won't be able to keep up with the women and their goals (or my own). I've just got to relax, breathe, and leap!

My personal goal is to lose 30 pounds by June. Not too bad of a goal, five pounds a month.

So, officially as of today: I'm starting at 173.1 with a BMI of 29.55 Not obese, just at the very high end of overweight. (nervous giggle) My Fit age goes anywhere from 32 to 40 which is very good considering I'm 40 years old.

I've been playing with the Wii for 22 days now. Opening new games, moves, exercises... My COB (center of balance) is pretty close to the vertical line most days. I really need to work on standing on my toes along w/ the heels. Hard habit to break. Some days my lower back is sore, but I think that's my body telling me that it's getting stronger and more balanced.

My routine for the last week: 5 -6 yoga poses/5 -6 strengthening poses/25 minutes (or more depending on time) aerobics/3-4 balance games. I love to do the 20 minute steps while watching TV, and I'm getting more adept with the boxing.

Tomorrow night is the Grand Opening for Wii Fit Mommies. 7 -9 pm cst. Come join me and together we'll work off the weight.

Grammy sent these outfits. We had to stop unwrapping just so the girls could change. Hello Kitty is still very cool in this house!

All I want for Christmas is a lamp?? Yeap. She's in heaven.

Now the girls are asking to go to Borders to spend their gift cards. Then they want to spend their Christmas cash and get more Barbie things for the My House that GG got from Santa.

Recipe: Eggnog Quick Bread

I made this quick bread on Friday for AB's class. It was a hit. A few of the moms have asked for the recipe, so I thought I'd share it with you, too.
It comes from Pillsbury: The Complete Book of Baking (1993 edition)

Eggnog Quick Bread

2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup dairy eggnog (not canned)
1/2 cup margarine or butter, melted
2 t rum extract
1 t vanilla
2 1/4cups all purpose flour
2 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1/2 t nutmeg

Heat oven to 350. Grease bottom only of 9x5 loaf pan. Beat eggs in large bowl. Add sugar, eggnog, margarine, rum extract and vanilla; blend well. Add flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour into greased pan.

Bake at 350 for 45 - 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan. Cool completely. Wrap tightly and store in refrigerator.

Enjoy!

Actually, I should be thanking them. The coupons that I've scored from their magazine. The really neat offers that they have online (which I haven't won yet, but won't give up hope!). The ideas that they share. The secret shop that I performed at Walmart which not only gave me useful samples and coupons but was paid $10 to do.
I recently bought a subscription through the magazine/wrapping paper sale from my daughter's school. I plan on resubscribing this way next year, too. A sale for my daughter, a deal for me.

Oh, it snowed last night

Ok, maybe not last night. Tuesday I think it was?

And Wednesday after school we went out and celebrated.

I do believe I got in 40 minutes of Wii Fit that day.

Add 45 minutes outside in the balmy 9 degrees...

This is the small hill that we are trying to get up to no avail.

This is the year AB wants to do it all by herself. Up & down.

After several attempts she finally asked for my hand.

In which case the camera had to be put away... Weeeeeeeeee!

GG is a pro on the small and big hill.

I do think this time will be different. You see, I've bought the Wii Fit. Well, Tony got it for me for Christmas. Thank you sweetie!
~A group of Twitterers got together and formed the group Wii Fit Mommiis and I received an invitation to join. What? I can exercise from my own home? Done that. Failed from lack of will power. The Mommiis have a support group and I read a testimonial for the Wii Fit HERE.
~I have high hopes for this program. And the really cool thing... I know the girls will want to 'walk' with me and me Wii Fit. I know that they will want to do what Mommy's doing. I somehow know that this will be a good thing.
